Dems shift tactics, pound Wis. governor on probe
MADISON, Wis. (AP) ? Lost in the hoopla over the effort to recall Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker after he took on union rights is an ongoing secret investigation that has already ensnared a handful of the Republican governor’s former aides.
The investigation by Milwaukee County‘s district attorney hasn’t resonated with voters, but with the June 5 recall less than three weeks away Democrats have started playing up questions about why Walker created a criminal defense fund for himself and whether the governor might face charges next.
Walker has branded the strategy a “cheap political stunt,” but Democrats are banking that the tactic will help them curry favor with the dwindling pool of undecided voters who could turn the election.
“The public deserves some answers as they try to decide who to vote for,” said Jeremy Levinson, an attorney for the state Democratic Party. “He just needs to explain what’s going on. It’s that simple.”
Republicans say Democrats are grasping for an edge as polls show Walker pulling ahead of Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. The most recent Marquette University Law School poll, released Wednesday, showed Walker leading by 6 percentage points after the race was essentially a dead heat a month ago.
“When you’re down or your message isn’t playing the way you want it to in a tight race, you’ve got to find something else,” said Brandon Scholz, a Madison lobbyist who has worked on a number of GOP congressional races across the country. “You’ve got to change that message and find something that sticks.”
The push to recall Walker began last year after he championed a contentious law stripping most public sector workers of nearly all their collective bargaining rights. Democrats called it an all-out attack on organized labor, but Barrett’s easy primary victory over an opponent backed by most of the state’s major unions signaled the momentum for the collective bargaining argument may have started to fade.
Barrett moved on to beating up Walker over his inability to create jobs, harping on a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report that found Wisconsin lost the most jobs of any state between March 2011 and March 2012.
Meanwhile, Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm has been quietly investigating Walker’s associates during the governor’s tenure as Milwaukee County executive. Chisholm, a Democrat, has set the probe up as a so-called John Doe proceeding, meaning his prosecutors can subpoena witnesses and compel them to testify while barring them from speaking publicly about the case. Five people have been charged so far on allegations ranging from embezzling money from a veterans trust fund to campaigning on county time.
Walker has insisted he’s not a target, saying he learned honesty as an Eagle Scout and his county office even alerted Chisholm to the embezzlement.
Nobody has given any indication when the investigation might end or who else it might ensnare. However, Walker’s state spokesman, Cullen Werwie, who essentially serves as the governor’s public face in his dealings with the media, has testified in the closed-door probe in exchange for immunity.
And Walker has created a legal defense fund using campaign contributions. Wisconsin law allows officeholders to create such funds only if they or their agents are being investigated or have been charged with campaign or election violations. Walker has said he formed the fund to cover “expenses incurred in cooperating with the inquiry,” but he hasn’t elaborated on the probe.
Barrett, who has been jabbing the governor on the investigation for weeks, said Wednesday that Walker needs to clear the air because “when people realize what’s going on, they’re troubled by it.”
Still, the issue hasn’t seemed to have gripped voters. Marquette polls conducted since February have consistently shown most people either regard the investigation as politics as usual or don’t know enough about it to form an opinion about whether it’s truly serious.
“Either he’s being investigated or he expects to be charged,” said Sachin Chheda, who chairs the Milwaukee Democratic Party. “What kind of position would the state be in if we don’t know the facts, there’s an election and there’s an indictment after the election?”
Dick Frasser, a 74-year-old retired fire inspector from Watertown, said he plans to vote for the governor in the recall, despite the investigation.
“It’s typical politics,” Frasser said. “Ethically and morally, I suppose he does (need to explain his part in the probe). But they should do this after the election. Prior to it, they’re digging up all the dirt they can.”
The liberal attack group Greater Wisconsin Committee launched a television ad last week questioning how Walker didn’t know what his county employees were doing, and Barrett sent Walker a letter Tuesday demanding he disclose any advice state election officials may have given him that led to him forming his defense fund.
Walker campaign spokeswoman Ciara Matthews said in a statement that Barrett is resorting to political stunts to deflect voters’ attention from high unemployment in Milwaukee and his refusal to explain how he would manage the state budget. She didn’t address the investigation itself.
Asked Wednesday whether the governor was under investigation, Matthews responded by pointing to remarks Walker has made to the media since January saying people are twisting things, he’s not the target of the investigation and he agreed to meet with Chisholm to discuss the investigation.
Scholz, the former Republican operative, said Walker has nothing to gain by responding directly to Barrett. Democrats have run out of issues and are merely trying to put Walker’s camp on defense, he said.
“When you’re down or your message isn’t playing the way you want it to in a tight race, you’ve got to find something else,” Scholz said. “You’ve got to scratch for an issue. A John Doe is sexy. They’ll just throw it out there. If they can force the other side to lose a half-day, that’s what they’ll do.”

Should Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson Star in 50 Shades of Grey?
Would Kristen Stewart be up for starring in Fifty Shades of Grey?
She hasn’t read it yet, but she’s already dying to star in a new film with boyfriend Robert Pattinson, and it’s loosely based on their characters, so … maybe!
The sexy novel trilogy by EL James, recently acquired by Universal Studios in a movie deal, was inspired by Edward and Bella from the Twilight novels.
Knowing this, could she see herself and Rob in 50 Shades?
“I’m dying to make another movie with Rob, I think that we’re a good team,” Kristen said. “I think whatever it is needs to be so ridiculously ambitious.”
“So maybe! I just haven’t read it, so I don’t know too much about what it is, but I’ve heard good things, and would love to work with him again.”
Kristen reiterated that she “doesn’t know” when asked if she could picture herself and Rob playing Christian and Anastasia in 50 Shades of Grey.
You can see why the idea appeals to many fans, however – as does another faux vampire combo in The Vampire Diaries‘ Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev.
In the book, Ana (based off of Bella) falls for Christian (based on Edward Cullen), a rich 27-year-old entrepreneur who introduces her into his erotic world of S&M.
What’s your take? Would the Snow White and the Huntsman star be a good fit for the role? Vote for who you think should play both lead characters below:

Samford surges past No. 2 Florida
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? Samford right fielder Brandon Miller hit two home runs to bring his nation-leading total to 20 for the season in leading the Bulldogs to a 12-7 win against No. 2 Florida in Samford?s final home game of the 2012 season Tuesday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Miller became the first player in Samford history to hit 20 home runs in a single season.
?Obviously that is a great honor for him,? Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. ?He?s truly left his mark on the program. Wins like tonight help solidify what our kids feel like this program is becoming. To beat a team like Florida and a program with that tradition is huge for us, and for Brandon to hit two home runs against them justifies his ability.?
The game was the final home game for Samford?s 12 seniors on the 2012 roster, and several of the seniors came up big in the Bulldogs? win. Miller went 2-for-4 with two homers and four RBI. Saxon Butler went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Senior pitchers Joseph Burns and Tyler Vanderheiden turned in strong performances pitching in relief.

?That was a special night for a heck of a group of seniors,? Dunn said. ?All of those guys played well tonight. Saxon got a huge hit, Brad (Moss) caught well. All of those guys just competed tonight. What a great way for those guys to walk off the field for the last time.?
In addition to the seniors? performances, C.K. Irby went 2-for-5 with a triple and three RBI. Irby (4-1), who also was Samford?s starting pitcher in the contest, tossed 5.0 innings, allowing just one run on one hit to earn the win. Tyler Filliben went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Tommy Corbin also went 2-for-5 at the plate for Samford.
For Florida at the plate, Daniel Pigott went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Preston Tucker went 2-for-3 for the Gators. Mike Zunino hit a home run and drove in three runs in a 1-for-4 performance. Johnny Magliozzi (4-3) pitched 1.2 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits to take the loss on the mound for Florida.
Samford scored three runs in the first inning, two runs in the second inning and two more in the fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead. In the first inning, Irby hit a triple to center field with the bases loaded, driving in Miller, Phillip Ervin and Moss. In the second inning, Zeth Stone hit his first home run of the season with Filliben on base for a 5-0 Samford lead. In the fourth inning, Miller hit his first home run of the night with Butler on base for a seven-run Samford lead.
Florida put its first run on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Samford lead to 7-1. Jeff Moyer doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on a ground out by Taylor Gushue.
Samford answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 8-1. Filliben singled to center field to drive in Christiaan Durdaller for a seven-run Samford lead.
The Gators added a run in the top of the sixth inning when Tucker scored on a sacrifice fly by Justin Shafer. Samford came back with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 10-2. Miller homered for the second time, this time with Ervin on base, for a nine-run Samford lead.
Florida cut the lead to 10-5 in the seventh inning when Zunino homered to left field with Tucker and Nolan Fontana on base. Samford added two more in the bottom of the seventh inning. Butler singled to center field to drive in Filliben and Corbin to push Samford?s lead to 12-5.
The Gators added two final runs in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score 12-7. Brian Johnson and Pigott drove in a run each in the ninth inning for Florida.
The second-ranked Gators are the highest-ranked Division I team Samford has ever defeated. The game was played in front of 1,722 fans.

Hubbub over Elizabeth Warren’s ancestry continues
Warren (Steven Senne/AP)
It’s been three weeks since the Boston Herald first reported of Elizabeth Warren’s past claims of Native American heritage. And while Warren, and her campaign for Scott Brown’s Senate seat in Massachusetts, would dearly like to move past the controversy and turn attention to her criticism of Wall Street, political observers from both parties say there’s only one person to blame for the ongoing chatter: Warren herself.
The latest news fueling Massachusetts gossip mills comes Thursday from the Herald, which reports that Warren, a Democrat, contributed five recipes to a 1984 cookbook titled “Pow Wow Chow,” which was promoted as a collection of “special recipes passed down through the Five Tribes families.”
Warren, who says her belief that she was 1/32 Cherokee came from “family lore,”?listed herself as a minority in a law school directory between 1986 and 1995. She was also touted by both Harvard Law School and the University of Pennsylvania?where she taught?as a minority and a “woman of color.”
Warren, Harvard professor Charles Fried,?and other supporters publicly rejected accusations that Warren used minority status to gain an advantage under affirmative action. But Warren’s inability or unwillingness to produce either documentation of her heritage or university personnel records has kept questions circulating.
“There’s only one topic of conversation in this state and there has been for three weeks now,” Jim Barnett, the campaign manager for Brown, told Yahoo News. Both Brown’s campaign and Cherokee tribe members have called on Warren to release her personnel files from Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania. The records would ostensibly show whether she mentioned her heritage when applying for teaching positions.
Causing further heartburn for the Warren campaign, the New England Historical Genealogical Society on Tuesday reversed its claim that it possessed evidence of Warren’s Cherokee heritage.?Warren, who grew up in Oklahoma, says she has no documented proof of her heritage.
“I sympathize a little bit where they [Warren's staff] are?because they are getting much of the blame for mismanaging this crisis, but their problem is that they have a candidate that’s not telling the truth,” Barnett told Yahoo News.
Warren’s press secretary Alethea Harney declined to respond to requests for comment from Yahoo News.
While the Native American story continues to dominate coverage of the Massachusetts Senate race, Warren is trying to steer the conversation back to her presumed strength as a candidate: her willingness to take on Wall Street. Warren, a star consumer advocate who was Obama’s first choice to head up the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (though Republicans blocked her appointment),?called on Jamie Dimon, the chief executive of JPMorgan, to resign from the New York Federal Reserve Board following the company’s admission that it suffered a surprise $2 billion loss.
“We have to say as a country, no, the banks cannot regulate themselves,” Warren said Tuesday on CBS.
Warren’s campaign also released a new campaign ad Wednesday that tries to remind viewers why she was a highly coveted Democratic recruit for the Massachusetts Senate race.
“Big banks, institutions, Wall Street … She’s not afraid of anybody,” a woman says in the ad.
Warren began the week by calling for a new Glass-Steagall Act?the New Deal-era banking reform law that was repealed in 1999. On Monday, both her campaign and the state Democratic Party criticized Brown for accepting donations from J.P. Morgan, and Warren’s campaign rolled out another attack on Wednesday, arguing that Brown has actively sought to weaken federal Wall Street reforms.
“She has learned that when you are under attack, you have to respond, and respond quickly and hit back,” Democratic strategist Mary Anne Marsh of Massachusetts told Yahoo News.
Despite the hullabaloo over Warren’s ancestry, Massachusetts voters aren’t seeing the issue play out in attack ads.
In a startling move that sets this race apart from many other high-profile Senate contests this election year, Brown and Warren agreed in January to curb all political attack ads from outside groups by donating to their opponent’s charity of choice if outside supporters ignored their request to refrain from airing any ads?positive or negative.
In a state that has traditionally leaned Democratic, both Brown and Warren have run ads in recent weeks featuring their connections to President Barack Obama, though Obama actually appeared in the television commercial for Warren. (Brown has?touted himself as a bipartisan voice in Washington.)
“She’s a janitor’s daughter who has become one of the country’s fiercest advocates for the middle class,” Obama says in Warren’s ad.

Justin Bieber Is Big Floyd Mayweather Fan, 50 Cent Says
Rapper tells MTV News about being at Mayweather’s match against Miguel Cotto with the Biebs and Lil Wayne.
By Rob Markman
<P>Everyone loves a champion, and currently there is no bigger boxing champ than Floyd "Money" Mayweather. Not only did the outspoken pugilist attract a record number of pay-per-view fans for his May 5 <a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/05/06/floyd-mayweather-defeats-miguel-cotto-lil-wayne-and-50-cent-meet-justin-bieber-watches/">match against Miguel Cotto</a>, he also brought music's brightest stars to the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on fight night. Of course <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/50_cent/artist.jhtml">50 Cent</a> was on hand to cheer on his buddy Floyd, and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lil_wayne/artist.jhtml">Lil Wayne</a> made their way to the ring as well.</P><P>Many fight fans were surprised to see that the Biebs had been in Mayweather's dressing room for the fight preparations; after that, JB walked with the undefeated Floyd to the ring, helping to hold the champ's belts.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Boxing Brought Together 50 Cent, Justin Bieber And Lil Wayne" id="vid:769373" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>"Justin is also a Floyd fan. They love the sport. A lot of people like it and haven't actually made contact or received anything to make them feel like it was cool or comfortable enough for them to come," 50 said about JB's much-discussed ring walk. "When it actually happens and it goes down like that, it feels good. When they get a chance to see different genres, different people, everybody's excited."</P><P>One of the more excited fans was Floyd's daughter Iyanna, who, according to 50, was fixated on the teenage idol. "Floyd's daughter, Yaya, she saw half the fight, the other half she was looking at Bieber," the rapper joked. "He just got that thing for the younger generation, too — he's it."</P><P>Some were also surprised to see Lil Wayne in the ring. In the past, he and 50 haven't been the best of friends, so many assumed that Floyd would inherit <a href="/news/articles/1582130/lil-wayne-50-cent-deny-beef-mixtape-monday.jhtml">Fif's perceived rap beefs</a>, but that isn't the case. In fact, Mayweather is a Weezy fan; he listens to his music constantly while training.</P><P>"Floyd has a huge passion for music that people don't know about," 50 explained. "It's a big part of what makes him comfortable and takes his mind off of how hard he has to work to stay being the #1 fighter in the world. With Wayne's music momentum, he's a part of that; he's been a part of the playlist, so it's cool."</P><P>After Floyd dusted off Cotto in a unanimous decision, he, Bieber, Weezy and 50 all celebrated in the ring and even posed for a few pictures. Though Fif sported his patented menacing scowl, he insists that there was no problem whatsoever. "The pictures, when I'm not paying attention, they take some really weird facial expressions of me," he said. "I'm like, 'What the f— was I thinking at that point?' It's nothing there to make me feel uncomfortable."</P><P><i>Should Justin Bieber join Floyd Mayweather's Money Team? The Tomb Is Open for Business
Production is officially underway in New Orleans on the action-thriller The Tomb. Sylvester Stallone stars as Ray Breslin, the world?s foremost authority on structural security. Female terrorists’ bios belie stereotypes
ScienceDaily (May 15, 2012) ? Much like their male counterparts, female terrorists are likely to be educated, employed and native residents of the country where they commit a terrorist act, according to new research published by the American Psychological Association.
The findings contradict stereotypes presented in previous studies that describe female terrorists as socially isolated and vulnerable to recruitment because they are uneducated, unemployed and from a foreign land, psychologists reported in a study published online in the APA journal Law and Human Behavior. These assumptions are not supported by evidence, according to the study authors.
“We discovered that some of the popular notions about female terrorists do not reflect what has occurred in the past,” said the study’s lead author, Karen Jacques, PhD. “A more realistic description is helpful because it provides insights into the social dynamics that might promote an individual’s involvement in terrorist activities.”
Researchers at Lancaster University in the United Kingdom examined archival biographical data from multiple sources on 222 female and 269 male terrorists connected to one of 13 conflicts involving nationalist-separatists, social revolutionaries or religious fundamentalists, including al Qaeda, the Irish Republican Army and the Popular Liberation Army of Colombia.
Jacques and her co-author, Paul J. Taylor, PhD, examined eight variables for each terrorist: age at first involvement, education, employment status, immigration status, marital status, religious conversion, criminal activity and activist connections.
The majority of both female and male terrorists were between 16 and 35 years old, native residents, employed, educated through secondary school, not converted from another religion and rarely involved in a previous crime, the study said. Compared to male terrorists, the researchers found, women had on average more education, with the majority continuing beyond secondary school, and were more likely to be divorced or widowed, less likely to be employed and less likely to be immigrants. Collectively, the findings for female terrorists indicated more of an emphasis on individual motivations, such as personal revenge for the death of a loved one, rather than collective engagement in terrorism, the authors said.
“A surprising finding was that, unlike for other criminals, there were very few instances of previous involvement in criminal activity among both females and males,” said Jacques. “This could be because they were unwilling to confess to other crimes, because criminality could attract authorities’ undue attention to potential terrorists, or the possibility that having a criminal career is not a significant precursor to terrorism.”
About a third of both male and female terrorists had prior connections to terrorism activities via their families. However, more than 50 percent of those with family connections to terrorism indicated that family influence did not motivate them to carry out terrorist activities, the study said.
The American Psychological Association, in Washington, D.C., is the largest scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States and is the world’s largest association of psychologists. APA’s membership includes more than 137,000 researchers, educators, clinicians, consultants and students. Through its divisions in 54 subfields of psychology and affiliations with 60 state, territorial and Canadian provincial associations, APA works to advance psychology as a science, as a profession and as a means of promoting health, education and human welfare.

NYC man spends $ 60G-plus on cross-country custody battle over pet dog
News from Fox News:
NEW YORK ? ?A New York City man says his cross-country legal battle for custody of his little dog Knuckles is making him broke, but he is not going to roll over.
Craig Dershowitz says he has already spent upwards of $ 60,000 in his court fight for the pooch he considers his ?son,? and now he is turning to the web in the hopes of raising another $ 20,000 to keep his quest alive.
?I?ve pretty much gone through my life savings,? the 34-year-old gallery employee said, but he quickly added, ?It?s worth it.?
In papers filed earlier this year in Manhattan Supreme Court, Dershowitz said ex-girlfriend Sarah Brega ?took unilateral control of Knuckles and kidnapped him? after they broke up ? spiriting the dog away to California.
Brega says that Dershowitz ?unconditionally gifted? her the dog, and that the puggle ? half pug, half beagle ? is enjoying life with her out on the Left Coast.

As per the existing Act, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and rules of the State government and Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), animal census must be done after every five years.
